December 1st

Oh my! It’s already 1st December and it’s officially the first day of summer here in Australia….. so you would expect it to be sunny and warm…. but on Kangaroo Island, it’s quite a bit different – it’s been COLD!!!

We had an overcast and cold day, more like early winter or a wet spring day really. As I am writing this, I am wearing my winter coat and both the cats are on my lap ( I think that means they are feeling cold too).

It’s the last month in the year and looking back it has been a HUGE year for me in so many ways and it’s a milestone year as well as it will be my 20th year on Kangaroo Island in just a few days time.

I remember the huge move, from living in a big city with a big (and growing) population of several million, lots of traffic and buildings everywhere……. to an island with a population of 4000 with no traffic lights and no street lights outside of the town….. looking up into the sky and seeing the stars at night, not being able to fall asleep because it was so quiet without all the city noises.

The busy city lifestyle with lots of travel, working in a different city/country every few weeks, shopping centres, airports and hotels…. waking up in a different city in a hotel room ‘somewhere’……Β  making my way through heavy traffic to get from one place to another or checking in once again at the airport to get from once city/country to another…. THAT was my life 20 years ago.

Today…… I live on an island in South Australia (keep going south a couple of thousand kilometres and the next stop is the Antarctic) with no traffic lights or roundabouts, no street lights outside the 3 main towns, the sound of the wind in the trees or the koala grunting outside on a nearby gum tree, sheep on the driveway (sometimes a cow or more), the night sky lit up by stars when there are no clouds and we are so lucky to have such a pristine environment here that we use rainwater for all our drinking, cooking and washing instead of chlorinated and fluoridated town water.

I work at a natural wildlife marine sanctuary, we grow our own veggies and herbs as much as we can, I make my own skin and personal care products……. and I am getting back down to basics with our healthcare supported by a fabulous range of therapeutic grade essential oils.

This year has been a fantastic year for feeling good. I was starting to feel the aches and pains that come with a desk bound job with so many hours on a computer and of course turning 58 has a great deal to do with it for sure – normal wear and tear on the body is to be expected.

This time last year we had come back from our annual vacation and I was still in pain in my left arm (which had been so bad in October I had to stop lamp work demonstrations) and my neck, back and shoulders were just achy from being tense from concentration at work. It’s no fun having Tennis Elbow or a frozen shoulder!! It was common for me to bring my wheat bag to work to give me some relief from that tension. It was also a common sight for me to have a day of endless sneezing, coughing, teary eyes and some days it was so bad my ribs and stomach would be aching from the severe hay fever attacks that I was so prone to at this time of the year.

Canola Field - Kangaroo Island
Canola Field – used to make my eyes itch just driving past

Today…… I can walk into a field of grass or flowering canola, or just be out and about amongst flowering plants and be just fine. I have not had a hay fever attack at all this season!!! I no longer have to use the wheat bags for relief on my neck, back and shoulders.

What’s changed?

I was introduced to doTERRA essential oils by Leonie Dawson. She posted on her Instagram that she had started using essential oils and was loving it. We were (I thought) running out of soap and I needed to make some more, I wanted some fresh essential oils (no – I have never used synthetic fragrances in my products) and there were two brands that kept popping up in conversations and in my online feeds. With one of them, lots of friends in Malaysia were using the brand…. but when I tried to obtain information on their oils it was so hard I gave up and decided to get the basic starter kit from doTERRA because it was such good value and I wanted the diffuser…..

Well…… let me tell you….. THAT CHANGED MY LIFE!!!

I was able to find relief from the pain that was in my elbow and neck, the aches in my neck, back and shoulders within just hours of using the oils and over the next few months when I started using the oils and taking the supplements…. I have not looked back. In the last few years, I have had to travel with my pillow – honestly, it is not fun having a stiff neck or shoulder from using a pillow that doesn’t support your neck/shoulder but now I don’t have any issues and am quite okay with just making do with the pillows provided. THAT is another huge thing for me. In June, I noticed that the ganglian that has been growing quite a bit on my left foot didn’t seem as big as it was last summer, not sure why but…… that was another change I have noticed.

In late September I noticed that my eyes were not tearing up nor getting itchy as I drove in and out of Kingscote past those flowering fields of Canola… that used to set me off almost every time in the past. I made my partner take me to a canola field, I got out and WALKED IN amongst the flowers…. did a bit of a ‘Sound of Music twirl’ and waved my arms around to stir up the flowers (if anybody had been watching they would have thought I was crazy!!) and breathed in huge lungfuls….. and…… NO SNEEZING….. NO ITCHY EYES…. NO COUGHING !!!!

What’s changed?

All I have changed in my regime has been my use of essential oils since late January 2017 and taking the supplements since April 1st this year. NOTHING ELSE but MY LIFE HAS CHANGED so much for the better that I have been sharing my love of the oils I can’t stop talking about them, sharing them with people around me and just generally feeling awesome and happy with these changes in my health.

Yes…. my enthusiasm must have been scary because some people actually started to avoid me when I tried to tell them that the oils could help them…. but it has been a good turnaround now… I am almost into my 11th month with the oils and I am feeling really good with my health and in myself. They have helped in my physical health and they have also helped support me in my emotional needs as well. When I am feeling down (not so often these days) or unmotivated, using the oils aromatically help to centre me once again and give me a boost to get up and keep going.

So…. I ramble… and I will probably ramble a bit more but it’s been an awesome 11 months of sharing these oils and seeing the difference it has made in so many people, it makes my heart sing. I have always been told I am a ‘Mother Hen’, ‘Nurturer’ and sometimes my kin have teased me about being ‘Dr. Quack’ as I pull out some oil, potion or balm for an ailment….. so nothing has changed really…. except that I now have an arsenal of beautiful oils that have been researched and tested to be of therapeutic grade and they are produced ethically and thoughtfully from plants that have been grown and harvested in communities that are supported by the use of these oils.

So as I muse on the last month of this year and the start of a new adventure of healing and caring…. as I am about to celebrate 20 years of living simply on an island I call Paradise…. I feel happy, content and most importantly I feel well.

If you would like to follow me on this journey….. feel free to subscribe to my blog. I know it’s been a bit neglected over the last few years but I am once again finding purpose in my wellness.

I’m glad I made it to the market……

So… it was market day again today and yesterday was supposed to have been a day of making, prepping and packing…… but I just couldn’t quite muster up the energy and inspiration until late in the afternoon.

Yesterday was my first ‘Day Off’ since we have come back from our holiday and there are still bags to unpack….

It’s been a whirlwind with one day back in the office and then off again to the mainland for a couple of days of pre-season fire support training and then back for one night to whiz off to host a weekend retreat of ‘Oily Pleasures’ at Flinders Chase, back to a full on busy week at work……

I woke up yesterday, relaxed with lots of good intentions but as I sat down to unpack and check off all the recently received supplies for my balms etc… the morning got away and then I started to slow down and before I knew it it was mid afternoon without much market prep done.

Out came my iTOVI scanner and a quick reading told me which oils I whould use to perk me up and sure enough, once I popped them into the diffuser and applied some topically on me, the enthusiasm and energy flowed back. Unfortunately it was too late to whip out the double boilers and weighing scales so no balms were made.Β  I still felt tired – no amount of oily support is going to make up for tiredness from continued racing around (mentally and physically) so it was fair enough that I just needed some down time.

I even contemplated not going to the market today, the detour and ‘what if’ scenarios playing out in my mind…. all ‘those voices’ making excuses for me to just stay home today… but I decided that I should just go and meet people, talk to some folks and enjoy some time out.

As it turned out, it was an awesome day and I feel so much better for making the effort to be at the market and being able to serve the people who came today. It is always an awesome feeling when I am able to help someone feel better with the help of these wonderful gifts of nature and today was no exception.

It made my day that I was able to help folks feel better, it was good to feel that I could be of service and share these wonderful gifts that I now love so much for their potency and efficacy.

It was an awesome day out and tired through I might still be, it is now a tiredness filled with satisfaction and gratitude.

I now have two weeks to plan for the next market and this time I will have some balms and new products made up for the gift giving season.

August at the Melbourne Trade Fair with My Secret Weapons

What an epic start to this month. I attended the Retail Trade Fair in Melbourne. Last year was my first time and I was so exhausted at the end of each day after walking on hard concrete through massive halls filled with exhibiting stands. It’s pure concentration, lots of focus and there is just so much to absorb in a very short time.
I wore my trusty Rossi Boots again which helped with the sturdy soles taking most of the pounding from the hard concrete and my calves and feet were much better from the ‘prep’ with the IceBlue oil and rub on the soles of my feet and the calves at the start of the day.
I had my trusty IceBlue rollerblend in my bag to top up during the day on the shoulders and neck from hauling my rollercase and bag with catalogues and notebook around all day.
By 11.30am I could see dazed expressions on quite a few people at the fair, it wasn’t easy on the exhibitors either – standing on their feet all day and repeating themselves to each and every visitor to their stand.
It was still a worthwhile trip, great experience albeit challenging but armed with my trusty ‘Secret Weapons’ I was in better condition than most at the end of every day.

July 2017…… and I am still okay!

So, in Australia June is a huge month for anyone involved in financial reconciliations, stock takes etc as it is the end of the financial year. Normally it’s my ‘pressure month’ with lots of triggers, buttons that are easily pushed, I get extra sensitive and touchy about things….
This year, it seems i was more calm and balanced….. even though there were a few higly emotional moments like the death anniversary of my dad and receiving the notice of the passing of my cousin the day before the anniversary. All very raw and painful for me that weekend, reeling from emotions of loss, regret, anger, rejection and desolation…. I used my oils and they might have helped a bit, I didn’t cry too much.
I almost didn’t attend the Farmers’ Market last Sunday but I figured that staying home and pining wouldn’t have helped anyway.
So… I used this oil a lot!!! I have been using it a lot all through this month and it had kept me more balanced.

doTERRA Balance
Balance – a wonderfully grounding blend

I diffused it at home in the evenings, I wore it in my AromaVessel, I made a rollerblend of it with Frankincense to apply on me through the day, I diffused it in the car and at my desk at work. I made it through tto the 30th of June without major anxiety attacks.
I am truly grateful to have discovered these oils and having them in my life. I can’t imagine how I would be now without them.

If you would like to be part of my team, you can sign up here and you can join my FaceBook Group where I post all sorts of oily tidbits and specials.

It’s May already….. time does go quick when you are loving life!

So, it’s almost half way through 2017 and so much has happened.
If you recall, late last year I was in pain, unable to spend much time on the torch and to tell you the truth, I seriously thought I might have to give up lamp working.
When we were away on holiday in October/November last year, my left arm was in such pain and there were many moments when I didn’t even feel like I had the strength to lift my handbag much less push my suitcase along as we moved from one airport to another, one vacation location to another.
As chance would have it, a friend who is an osteopath recommended that I use a lacrosse ball and that with 10 days of swimming twice a day helped ease the pain a little bit but I still felt like I didn’t have full strength in my left arm and I was in pain most of the time.
Then in January, in my quest for essential oils that I needed to top up to make some soap as we were running out…. I came across these wonderful oils that I am now so in love with.
For a few weeks, I used the oil on my knees, neck and shoulder in the morning and even along the upper left arm. It gave me relief for the greater art of my day and so it became part of my daily routine.
Then in April, I started taking the supplements and I didn’t notice any difference but on the days that I forgot to apply the oil blend to my neck and shoulders, I didn’t seem to have that stiff aching anymore.
I had to go away for a week in early May and didn’t take the supplements with me… and thought i might put my neck out (I normally do when I don’t use my own pillow) but surprisingly, I was alright! I even managed to sleep quite well while I was away – that is normally a huge challenge when I am away from home.
I have now had several sessions on the torch from 2-4 hours and I have felt fine after that so it seems I am on a roll now.
On top of that…. I have had this really hard and awful bump on the top of my left foot which actually grew quite a bit last summer so much so that I was unable to wear my work boots because it felt like my circulation was cut off and my foot would go numb… but in the last couple of weeks I have noticed that the ganglian seems to have actually shrunk quite a lot. So maybe I can get away without having to have it surgically removed after all.
So….what has changed??
I am using these amazing oils in my daily routine and that’s the only change I have had.
Incredible, it’s true, they smell amazing and I feel good…. I am so grateful to have them in my life <3 ~~~ Lucky B ~~~ SimplyBea on Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island Inspiration – Authentic Kangaroo Island

If you have been to Kangaroo Island, you will know how pristine the waters are here and how the sandy beaches are just glorious….most of them have fine white/beige sand and we are so very lucky we can still walk barefoot along the sandy beaches here.

These beads are a long time favourite of mine to make and everyone who sees them is reminded of the beaches and the coastline of Kangaroo Island.

SimplyBea Lampworked Beads – Inspired by the Kangaroo Island Coastline

It’s no wonder that they are my ‘flagship’ look and this inspiration carries on over to many of my pieces.

I am also very pleased to announce that I am now a part of the Authentic Kangaroo Island team which showcases that same look as part of their branding exercise.

Thanks for looking πŸ™‚

Back at the Markets!!!

Yesterday was such a gorgeous day in Kingscote, I am so glad I decided to get a stall at the Kingscote Farmer’s Market. It wasn’t an overly busy day in comparison to the other market days but for me, it was good as it gave me a chance to chat with folks and actually have a conversation with most people who dropped by. It’s not easy when you are on your own at the markets, trying to engage with visitors and not ignore anybody. So if you did see me at the market and I wasn’t able to catch up with you, my utmost apologies!!!

SimplyBea at Kingscote Farmer’s Market

I was really lucky that my stall was in a location that allowed me to enjoy the occasional breeze that came through and I was even able to get power to run the doTERRA diffuser at my stall. That was really helpful, the Frankincense kept me alert and focused, sending a lovely scent around my stall. I was able to showcase the kit I encourage newcomers to get – the Home Essentials Kit which is a great way to be introduced to the doTERRA range.

doTERRA Home Essentials Kit

The kit comes with a diffuser and 10 oils. Six 15ml bottles of single essential oils – Frankincense, Lavender, Peppermint, Lemon, Oregano, Tea Tree. Three doTERRA 15ml blends – On Guard, DigestZen, EasyAir and one 5ml bottle of Ice Blue (THE magic oil for strains/sprains). All this for AUD330 if you sign up for a wholesale account.

If you purchase each individual item on its own, the cost at wholesale is AUD427.75 and at retail it would be AUD570.47. So as you can see, it is definitely a great savings to sign up for a wholesale account.

You can read the details HERE on how to sign up.

If you sign up through me and get the Home Essentials Kit, you will get one of my handmade AromaVessels ($45 retail) as a gift from me for signing up before 28th Feb 2017.

AromaVessel_Aqua_Swirls – Inspired by the clear waters of Kangaroo Island

There are a few to choose from and I will send you the available ones once you have signed up for your doTERRA account. Even if you just pay for your wholesale membership which gets you 25% discount of all your purchases – $35 for the first year and $25 (with a free bottle of Peppermint) each year after that – you will still get to pick your own AromaVessel. Remember, there is no obligation to buy every month but believe me, once you try these oils……you will be wanting to get them all and use the ones you get!

Check out all the great info on my Facebook Page , I will be posting more hints and tips on how to enjoy your essential oils.

2017 – A New Year and a New Start

Yes, it is 2017 and it’s already been busy, fun filled, full of new and exciting happenings all around me.

2016 was a year full of challenges met and satisfactorily overcome. A year of high energy and immense satisfaction in meeting challenges, resolving issues and getting on top of lots of things. Yes, I sound vague but I don’t want to bore you with the details πŸ™‚

So…..late last year, I decided that I would invest in myself and make it an even better year going forward. I signed up for a course about setting goals and keeping an abundant and positive mindset. I am more mindful of my innerspeak, my perspective on life and getting up earlier to have some me time to gather my thoughts and set the tone for my day.

It’s been awesome, I still have ‘sleep ins’ occasionally until the alarm goes off but I do enjoy those mornings when I sneak out of bed and have an hour or more to myself and enjoy that silence of the morning, sometimes with one (or both) of the cats trying to snuggle up on my lap.

Part of that journey of investing in myself led me to look for a good supplier of essential oils that I can use around me all day. Our stash of soap is running low which means I will need to make some more soon and I only use essential oils in my soaps and balms, so that got me going.

That led me to doTERRA as I had good reviews on their products from people in my business mastermind who absolutely love them and have formed a great support group for promoting the product range.

Then of course, as I LOVE having my oils around me ALL DAY, it’s not easy plugging in a diffuser and walking around with it, so I started making more AromaVessels to use and that got me back into the studio again which has been awesome. I had neck and shoulder issues last October during the KI ArtFeast demos and had to give up as it was just too painful to be on the torch.

AromaVessel inspired by Kangaroo Island Beaches

So now I am all set to promote my love for essential oils and the range which I love which is doTERRA and for anyone who signs up through me before the end of February 2017, I will be gifting them an AromaVessel made by me.

I will have a stall at the Kingscote Farmers Market over the next few months, so keep a look out on my page as I will postΒ  to advise when I am there. Come and have a look at the creations I will bring with me and have a chat about doTERRA essential oils if you are keen.

KI Art Feast 2016

I will be at Raptor Domain over the three days of the October long weekend starting tomorrow Saturday 1st October through to Monday. I will be set up for lampwork demonstrations with my trusty Scorpion 😊

Lampwork demonstrations at Raptor Domain
Lampwork demonstrations at Raptor Domain

The weather forecast for this weekend is a bit different from the last two years when it’s been so hot I have felt like passing out while the torch was on. The last 3 days have been intense here in South Australia with heavy rain and strong winds (mainly on the mainland) and it has made it extremely challenging to finish my preparations for the weekend. We have been really lucky on Kangaroo Island that it wasn’t as severe as the forecasts and we have had the backup generator which has kept the island powered up while many parts of South Australia lost electricity and some areas were without electricity for a great many hours.

Anyway, here’s hoping that I have managed to pack all the gear I need for the weekend and that it will be a good weekend at Raptor Domain.

Demos will run throughout the day from 1030am to 3.30pm. I hope to see you there 😊

1st September = Spring DownUnder

So, it’s the 1st day of September, it’s officially the first day of Spring here in Australia.

Last Friday we were still in August but I woke up with an itchy/sore throat and runny nose. In fact, my nose insisted on running a marathon for the next TWO days before I realised I might not be having a bout of hay fever after all!

Saturday evening, Mr. P tells me he has ‘a bit of an itch’ at the back of his throat. Uh-Oh…alarm bells ring……normally THAT means he is coming down with something…so I quickly go looking for my Ventolin only to find out that it is close to expiry. I mean….REALLY!!!??!! The last time I needed it was in October last year just before we went on holiday and I ended up with bronchitis after a coughing spell.

Too late to head off to the pharmacy (about 50km away) that evening so we plan to go in first thing on Sunday to ‘get some drugs’ for Mr. P and a new Ventolin spray for me.

Sunday – I haven’t stopped coughing and sneezing, nose is still running that darn marathon. Mr. P has started the day groggy, hardly a voice….time to call in sick and head off into town to the pharmacy which is thankfully open on the weekends in the morning.

Get to the pharmacy, produce my prescription for a new spray….the staff member looks at it and gently tells me that the prescription has run out….REALLY!!!??!! Oh my!!! This is NOT getting any better by the minute……thank goodness she then tells me that she can still issue me with a spray but not at such a good price as with the prescription. THANK GOODNESS because that has been keeping me from wheezing like crazy since the day before.

Unfortunately it seems there is nothing they can prescribe us over the counter to help either of our symptoms except lots of rest and keep the fluids up. Back home to cook up more bone broths – thank goodness for my trusty pressure cooker. A quick trip to the supermarket for more bones, veggies and back home to stay warm and cook up more broths!!!

Monday – hmmmm….Mr. P has not slept all night and looks totally washed out, nose is running a similar (probably harder) marathon as my nose has been….so we wait patiently/impatiently for 8.45am to call the clinic and try to get an appointment to see a doctor. Yes, that is the system here on Kangaroo Island πŸ™

Luckily we can get an appointment for both of us in the afternoon to see our preferred doctor YAY!!! We just have to survive until then! MORE bone broth with more noodles…..!!!

We get there….it’s a virus (different ones for both of us it seems) and Mr. P’s doctor told him he looked terrible as soon as he walked in through the door…..HA that would have been really encouraging (NOT!!!)….he already felt that way….couldn’t even drive so I had to drive in coughing and spluttering….tests done…..wait for the results……in the meantime…we are contagious so stay home, rest and keep the fluid up – no medication will help!!

Back home to turn on the vaporiser, diffuser and just generally keep the humidity up so we can breathe for the next few days. Pressure cooker has been busy making bone broths – chicken, beef, fish and so on……..noodles, fine noodles, medium noodles, thicker noodles… in the soup with homegrown veggies…, honey and apple cider vinegar…….more rest..

Results come back….Hallelujah it’s not a know strain of influenza – what have we got? Some virus infection…

Oh, okay – what can we do? Rest…keep the fluids up..

Hmmmm…are we still contagious? We are still coughing and lots of runny stuff…Yes, we are still contagious….right….so……we can’t really go out in case we give someone else the bug besides the fact we don’t feel like being out anyway….it’s giving us a taste of being ‘imprisoned at home’!!!

This morning was the FIRST morning since Friday last week that I woke up without feeling like my chest was congested and nose all stuffed up….the vaporiser has not been turned on and we have not had to make up another pot of bone broth for tomorrow. We must be on the mend!!

1st of September, a new day in a new month and one that has brought us some relief finally!!!
